Streamlining Parcel Data Integration with FME
Located east of Atlanta, Georgia, Newton County spans suburban and rural areas serving a population of approximately 110,000. The County’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) department plays a critical role in mapping, spatial analysis, and maintaining Tax Assessor parcel data. Parcel data—including addresses, parcel numbers, acreage, value, and ownership—contributes to essential services across Newton County.
To provide up-to-date parcel information, the GIS department extracts data nightly from Computer-Assisted Map Appraisal Systems (CAMA) and shares it across departments, including Enhanced 911, Planning & Development, Elections, Emergency Services, and Public Utilities. This process is key to providing stakeholders across the county with the most up-to-date information.
Leveraging FME to streamline operations and facilitate informed decisions
For years, Newton County relied on a complex and cumbersome mix of SQL and Python scripts to integrate Tax Assessor’s data with GIS systems. The process was difficult to maintain and update, involving eight separate steps rather than a single streamlined workflow. Further, the team depended on retired Esri technology, which was no longer supported. Newton County needed a more robust and scalable approach to deliver critical data to stakeholders.
Needing a ‘one-stop’ solution to simplify their workflows into a manageable process, Newton County collaborated with Safe Software partner Consortech to implement FME.
Transforming an outdated process into a modern, reliable solution with FME
Working with Consortech, Newton County replaced its eight-step process with a single automated FME workflow. This streamlined process integrated components of their existing SQL scripts to ensure consistency and reliability.
Using FME Transformers, the team introduced validation measures to improve the accuracy of their data. Quality control checks were integrated, allowing team members to be quickly notified if a process component fails or if manual records require review. With FME, the team has significantly enhanced data quality and accuracy.
Newton County’s GIS department has successfully transformed its parcel data integration process with FME. The new system has improved team efficiency and quickly provides stakeholders with more reliable, high-quality data that supports improved decision-making across county departments. The team is now better poised to support their citizens and ensure that critical information reaches stakeholders promptly.
