Automating road maintenance data in the Town of Mono for greater efficiency

With limited resources and just one GIS/IT technician, the Town of Mono turned to FME to automate tasks like managing road faults and repairs. By automating data processing and integrating it with ArcGIS Online, the Town boosted productivity and improved efficiency while maintaining high service levels for the community.

Boosting productivity in a busy, limited resource environment

The Town of Mono, a rural community in South Central Ontario with under 10,000 residents spread over 277 km², is responsible for maintaining infrastructure to ensure resident safety. With limited resources and just one GIS/IT technician, Mono needed a way to automate tasks related to managing road faults and repairs, such as potholes and traffic signals.

The technician’s workload grew when the Town partnered with Go-Evo, an operations management solution, to evaluate the visibility of road signals at night and assess their condition. Data needed to be downloaded from Go-Evo’s application and entered into ArcGIS Online (AGOL), the mapping application used by public works staff. This manual process took over an hour each day.

Following a recommendation from a nearby city, the Town reached out to Safe Software partner Consortech to fully leverage FME’s capabilities and automate their repetitive tasks.

Maximizing efficiency by streamlining processes with FME

Consortech reviewed the Town’s processes and provided training to ensure the GIS/IT technician could effectively use FME. A custom workspace was created to automatically process data from Go-Evo via an API connection and feed it into AGOL. This eliminated the need for manual data entry and ensured more accurate, up-to-date information in the system.

Although there were challenges with the complexity of the API integration, FME’s flexibility made it easy to adapt and optimize the solution. A brief working session with Go-Evo helped tailor the workspace to meet the specific needs of the Town, ensuring seamless integration with the existing system.

The new automated process saved the GIS/IT technician five hours per week, allowing him to focus on more strategic tasks, such as improving other public works processes. The integrated monitoring tool now provides peace of mind by notifying the technician of any issues with data processing, ensuring smooth and reliable operation.

With automation in place, the Town of Mono has experienced a significant productivity boost, maximizing their limited resources while maintaining high service levels for their community.

“Previously, I had a manual process that was not an efficient use of time and I knew I could leverage FME for automation. I now use the time I’ve saved to improve other processes and reduce manual tasks. The more I learn FME, the more I see it as a new colleague who takes on repetitive tasks without needing a break!”
