AWS and FME in action: 4 real-world examples

See how FME and AWS help deliver real-time data, automate updates, and support critical decisions across forestry, public services, and emergency response.

This work was done in collaboration with Safe Software partner AWS.

Across industries, organizations are increasingly moving to the cloud and turning to automation to meet growing demands in fast-paced business environments. But managing data across systems, formats, and environments can be complex. Manual workflows take time, strain resources, and introduce errors.

That’s where FME and AWS come in. Together, they offer a flexible and reliable way to integrate, automate, and deliver data solutions at scale. From public data portals and forestry analytics to emergency response and environmental monitoring, discover four examples demonstrating how organizations are using FME and AWS to solve real problems and deliver meaningful results.

Tesera Systems: Giving forestry clients self-serve access to data

Tesera, a consulting company based in Canada, works with forestry clients who depend on large and complex datasets to manage their environmental assets and natural resource inventories. Their challenge was clear: manual processes were slowing down data delivery and making it difficult for clients to access the information they needed, when they needed it.

To solve this, Tesera built a self-serve platform using FME Flow Hosted for automation, AWS S3 for secure data storage, and AWS SQS to manage task queuing. Clients now have a simple, intuitive way to explore, analyze, and download forest inventory data independently, without needing to request support.

Arkansas GIS Office: Keeping public data current and accessible

The Arkansas Geographic Information Systems Office is responsible for managing and sharing geospatial data across the state. With over 500 public datasets, updating everything manually was time-consuming and difficult to maintain at scale.

By automating updates with FME and using AWS S3 for storage, the team modernized the GeoStor platform, allowing workspaces to automatically manage requests for vector and raster data. Not only do the public and government agencies now have consistent access to up-to-date geospatial data through a system that is easier to manage and maintain, the migration also saved the Arkansas GIS Office $200,000 over three years.

Sterling Geo: Delivering satellite imagery to emergency responders

Sterling Geo supports emergency services in the UK by providing access to satellite imagery during critical events like wildfires or floods. The challenge was getting this imagery to responders quickly, in the right format, and at the right time.

Using FME to automate image processing and AWS infrastructure to manage delivery, Sterling Geo created the One Touch Tasking platform. The system delivers near-real-time Earth Observation data to emergency teams, helping them make informed decisions during time-sensitive situations.

Bluedot and GISTDA: Monitoring environmental changes during COVID-19

In Thailand, Bluedot and the national space agency GISTDA needed to understand how pandemic-related shutdowns were affecting the environment. They turned to satellite imagery to measure changes in air and water quality across the country.

With FME handling data integration and AWS powering the infrastructure, they built an automated system to retrieve and analyze large volumes of satellite data. This solution supported timely communication with the public and gave decision-makers the insights they needed.

Better Together

FME provided the flexibility to integrate and automate across formats and systems. AWS offered the cloud infrastructure to scale and support those solutions reliably. By using both, teams were able to build and maintain tools that fit their specific needs, whether supporting emergency responders, delivering public data, or enabling self-serve analytics.
