I brought FME into my courses to close a specific gap.
Students were learning spatial analysis with academic tools, and learning it well. But the tools they trained on are not the tools that run enterprise data operations. Nobody was showing them how data integration and workflow automation actually get handled in real business scenarios, and for their career readiness, that gap is critical.
I now teach FME in GIS Introduction and GIS Programming at Business and Technology University. Between 25 and 50 students have come through those courses.
The shift in how they think
The biggest impact has been a change in perspective, and it happens fast.
I have students build a workflow the manual way first, then rebuild it in FME’s visual environment. Once they see the same result arrive through an automated pipeline, the questions change. They stop asking what a single analysis produces and start asking how the process scales: where it can be automated, where it wastes effort, what happens when the data volume grows.
That is the moment they start thinking in ETL terms. Spatial data stops being a map to produce and becomes a system to design.
The skill that transfers
FME gives students code-free data transformation across hundreds of formats. That breadth matters more than it might sound.
It means they graduate having actually moved data between systems that were never designed to talk to each other, which is most of what data work looks like in practice. They can speak to automation, transformation, and scalable pipelines because they have built them, not read about them.
That is a competitive edge in the job market. It proves they understand modern data pipelines.
My advice to other instructors
Don’t hesitate.
FME does not need to be the subject of your course to change your course. Introduce it as a comparison point, or as an automation exercise, and it elevates the whole curriculum. Students leave prepared for real enterprise environments rather than classroom ones.
That is what I want for them: not just the ability to complete a spatial analysis task, but the instinct to ask how the whole pipeline should work.
