Improving community services in a Quebec municipality with FME

Wanting to improve community services and foster innovation, a Quebec municipality used FME to realize greater value out of their existing data. With the implementation of FME, the municipality optimized their workflows and reduced the manual effort required to structure and export data, positioning them to achieve greater time savings and to enhance services for their community.

Improving community services by maximizing access to municipal information

Serving a population of approximately 200,000 residents, a Quebec municipality set out to foster innovation and new services for their community. To meet these goals, the organization looked to empower their team members using the data that was already at their disposal.

At the outset of the project, the team identified three main goals:

  1. To convert GIS data to AutoCAD plans,
  2. To synchronize DWG plans during GIS database updates, and
  3. To improve the management of compost bin distribution across the community.

With only one user responsible for managing all GIS tasks, the municipality needed an optimized solution that was non-disruptive to their daily operations. In response, Safe Software partner Consortech worked with the team to better leverage their data with FME.

Realizing the full potential of FME to enhance efficiency, increase productivity, and save time

By integrating FME into the municipality’s workflows, the team was able to meet its project goals without interruption to daily workflows. The result was a seamless transformation as team members gained the skills and resources to empower better data utilization.

To ensure the solution’s long-term success and application, the municipality received hands-on, tailored training from Consortech. Through practical training of XSL and DWGS templates, the team is now able to seamlessly prepare DWG files for export, ensuring that GIS data is properly structured, formatted, and synchronized for AutoCAD. This optimization has reduced the time required to manually prepare their data and ultimately facilitated the conversion of GIS data.

Beyond, the solution’s implementation focused on database reading methods, automated task call-up by batch file, and the creation of email notifications. These capabilities represent a shift toward more automated and collaborative workflows, reducing manual interventions and ensuring team members receive timely updates. Tailored reports now provide better visibility into data quality, allowing the team to identify gaps, inconsistencies, and opportunities in their data.

Empowering the municipality with a long-term solution

With support from Consortech, the Quebec municipality has seamlessly implemented FME into their everyday processes to offer greater productivity, enhanced data quality assessments, and the tools to receive greater value out of their data. The skills and knowledge acquired, combined with a willingness to explore new opportunities with FME, will empower the team to tap into their data’s full potential as they move forward. The team is positioned to achieve even greater time savings moving forward, ensuring they continue to enhance services for their community.

“Our data is a valuable asset, and FME allows us to make it speak for the benefits of all our residents.”
