Enhancing geodata access for AEC projects
Felipe Verdú, Chief Data Officer at Norconsult Sverige AB, leads a team that plays a key role in digital transformation projects, serving clients in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. The team primarily focuses on handling geospatial data, helping various departments across the organization process, validate, and integrate large datasets into their workflows.
With FME at the core of their solution, the team developed GeoPangea, a centralized database for open geodata housed in PostgreSQL/PostGIS. This setup simplifies access to essential geospatial information, allowing employees to order the data they need for specific areas of interest via an FME Flow app. The app eliminates the need for manual downloads on a project-by-project basis, streamlining processes across the organization
Tackling inefficiencies in geodata processing
Prior to implementing FME, the team faced time-consuming challenges with manually downloading and updating geodata for each project, often leading to inconsistent data usage.
To address these inefficiencies, the team automated data updates using FME Flow, scheduling weekly updates to ensure that all departments have access to the latest geospatial information. Users can now request data in the desired coordinate system, enhancing workflow and data consistency. By centralizing data into one system with FME, the team has significantly improved efficiency, saving time and cutting costs.
This solution saves an estimated 20-25 hours per project, translating to 14,000 to 17,500 hours saved annually across 700 projects. The automation not only conserves time but also strengthens the company’s competitiveness by enabling more standardized and effective processes.
Beyond automating data updates, the FME solution empowers employees to request specific datasets through a web-based interface.
The app allows them to select areas of interest, specify coordinate systems, and obtain the required data without specialized skills, further streamlining the process.
Future-proofing geospatial data management
The success of the GeoPangea project highlights the importance of efficient data management in the AEC industry, especially as reliance on GIS systems grows. Norconsult Sverige AB is continuously exploring new ways to leverage FME’s capabilities, with a focus on expanding the automation of data integration and processing tasks across the organization.
