Automating processes to future-proof Alberta’s electrical grid
Managing data challenges for a smarter grid
AltaLink, a subsidiary of the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO), manages the province’s electrical grid. Its mission is to ensure reliable and efficient delivery of electricity to Albertans while minimizing environmental impact. Millions of Albertans count on AltaLink for the energy that powers their lives.
AltaLink’s Terravision Application (EMS) is critical in providing real-time grid monitoring insights. The data in EMS was not synced with their GIS data, and the update process was manually intensive, costly, and inefficient. The team needed a quick, repeatable, and automated process to meet future electrical needs. AltaLink’s need for better quality and repeatability for GIS data comparison stemmed from several operational challenges impacting their services’ efficiency and reliability, including data inconsistencies, manual processes, system downtime, scalability challenges, real-time data utilization and resource allocation.
Previously, AltaLink required system outages to update and synchronize their data, leading to operational interruptions. This downtime could affect grid performance and availability, reducing AltaLink’s ability to deliver seamless customer service.
Automating the data sync process with FME
AltaLink enlisted the help of Safe Software partner MNC, who have used FME for years to provide clients with practical and innovative solutions related to surveyed land information. They were looking for support with using FME to automate the process of analyzing, comparing, syncing, and updating the EMS system with their GIS.
MNC used FME to extract and transform GIS data into a format compatible with the EMS, enabling real-time updates without manual intervention or system downtime. The solution also included automated monitoring and maintenance processes to ensure long-term data quality and operational efficiency, significantly enhancing AltaLink’s ability to manage and deliver reliable energy services.
The importance of reliable energy services cannot be overstated, particularly for a region as dynamic and expansive as Alberta. MNC’s solution for AltaLink addressed their immediate challenges and laid the foundation for a more resilient and efficient power grid.
AltaLink significantly improved its operational efficiency and data accuracy by automating EMS and GIS data synchronization. This transformation allows AltaLink to deliver electricity more reliably, ensuring that the millions of Albertans who depend on their services experience fewer disruptions and benefit from a more stable power supply.
Reducing manual processes has also freed up valuable resources, allowing AltaLink to focus on strategic initiatives that enhance service delivery and grid management. The improved real-time data integration supports proactive maintenance and quicker response times, reducing interruptions and enhancing customer satisfaction. The team has also reduced costs, enhanced situational awareness, and improved reporting and analysis.
MNC’s innovative use of FME not only solved the existing data challenges but also strengthened AltaLink’s ability to meet future energy demands, reinforcing its commitment to delivering exceptional service while minimizing environmental impacts. With FME, AltaLink ensures that Albertans continue to enjoy the benefits of a modern, reliable, and efficient electrical grid, now and into the future.
